Dave Deutschman enters his 9th full season as Head Baseball Coach at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Since taking over the program in late 2016, Deutschman has transformed Southwestern Oregon Baseball into one of the most competitive and respected programs in the NWAC while building a culture centered on player development, academic achievement, and long-term success.
Under Deutschman’s leadership, Southwestern Oregon has consistently produced student-athletes who have advanced to four-year institutions throughout the country at every level of collegiate baseball, including NCAA Division I programs and Power Conference schools. His commitment to player development, recruiting, and mentorship has helped dozens of student-athletes continue both their academic and athletic careers after SWOCC.
Deutschman became the winningest coach in program history in just his sixth season and has overseen an era in which nearly every offensive, pitching, defensive, and team record in the program record book has been broken. The Lakers established numerous single-season records during the 2022 season and followed that performance with a historic 2023 campaign that included a school-record 27 victories, a program-best .965 fielding percentage, and 194 stolen bases, an NWAC all-time record.
While the on-field accomplishments have been significant, Deutschman’s impact on the program extends far beyond wins and losses. As the architect of the modern Southwestern Oregon Baseball program, he has directed extensive facility improvements that have dramatically enhanced the student-athlete experience. Through fundraising efforts, community partnerships, and strategic planning, Southwestern Oregon Baseball has added a new batter’s eye, upgraded scoreboard, improved indoor training facilities, installed windscreens throughout the complex, enhanced player-development technology, and developed a two-story concession stand and press box facility. These projects have elevated the program’s visibility.
Deutschman oversees all aspects of the baseball program, including recruiting, player development, academic oversight, budget management, fundraising, travel coordination, facility operations, and conference compliance. His leadership has helped establish a sustainable foundation for long-term success both on and off the field.
Academically, Southwestern Oregon Baseball has excelled under Deutschman’s guidance. His teams have consistently maintained cumulative GPA’s above 3.0 while emphasizing accountability, personal growth, and academic achievement. Numerous student-athletes have graduated and transferred to four-year institutions prepared for success in both the classroom and on the field.
Prior to arriving at Southwestern Oregon, Deutschman served as Head Coach of the Three Rivers AAA American Legion program in Florence, Oregon, where he helped numerous players navigate the college recruiting process and advance to collegiate baseball opportunities. Among those players was future Oregon State All-American and 2017 MLB Fourth-Round Draft Pick Jake Thompson. Deutschman also served as an assistant coach at Central High School, Harrisburg High School, and with the San Diego Stars Semi-Pro organization.
In the summer of 2022, Deutschman helped establish the Flagstaff Star Chasers of the Northern Arizona League, creating additional opportunities for collegiate players to compete and develop during the summer months. In the organization’s inaugural season, the Star Chasers posted a 21-12 record and finished second in the league standings.
During his playing days, He was a three-time 1st team all conference player and in his senior year a 1st team all state player at Junction City High School in Oregon. He went onto play college baseball at College of the Siskiyous where he was a 1st team all conference player as a freshman. His sophomore year was cut short due to a season-ending injury. He transferred to Western Oregon University where he had sustained two separate season ending injuries and decided to move on from playing and started his coaching career. He was fortunate to learn the game from coaches like Jim Dietz from San Diego State University who is one of the winningest coaches in D1 history and is in the ABCA Hall of Fame. Coach Dietz is responsible for finding players like Tony Gwynn, Mark Grace, and Mark McGuire to name a few. His uncle Mickey Deutschman who was a long time Atlanta Braves scout, Owner/Manager of the San Diego/Barona Stars. Mickey was inducted into the NBC and Semi-Pro Hall of Fames. Cal Fagan at Junction City HS, who was inducted into the OSAA Hall of Fame. As well as Jeremiah Robbins while at Western Oregon University who is now the head coach of Lewis & Clark State College (2-time National Champion).
Deutschman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Western Oregon University and a Master's Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine. In addition to his coaching duties, he serves as a full-time Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education at Southwestern Oregon Community College, where he has spent a decade teaching and mentoring students.
Widely respected for his commitment to student-athlete development, program building, and educational leadership, Deutschman has built a reputation for creating opportunities that extend well beyond the baseball field. His vision and leadership continue to shape Southwestern Oregon Baseball into a destination program for student-athletes seeking competitive success, academic achievement, and preparation for the next level.
Deutschman resides in Coos Bay, Oregon, with his wife, Malia, and their children, Duke and Blake.
